You will then learn how to get the most commonly available plane types, Stanley style block and bench planes, ready to use. Attendees will learn what tools and materials are used in plane restoration followed by hands on experience with the various stages. You may bring your own plane to work on if you have one, and if you don’t have a plane, wait to get one till after class there will be plenty of planes to practice on available. And you will leave with the skills to pick out one of your own!

Michael’s fascination with old tools dates to 1972 when as a child he inherited three Stanley planes. In 1980 he did a 9 month apprenticeship which instilled a love of fine woodworking. Trained using machines but long intrigued with old ways of working wood, a chance encounter with a major antique tool dealer in the late 1990s turned him into a woodworking tool collector focused on hand planes.
