Saturday-Sunday, August 12th & 13th
9am - 4pm each day (14 hours)
Earth OVENS are easy as mud pies, and perform exactly like commercial models costing thousands. Cook pizza in as little as 90 seconds; then bread, meat, fish, vegetables, casseroles, soups, & stew; desserts, steamed bread, rice pudding; then dry fruit, firewood, or wet shoes! Insulated ovens can cook all day on one firing, and the fire transforms clay-earth into brick. We will build a full-size oven, a mini oven, and the fires to heat them up!
Age Requirement: This class is for adults and youth 15-17 if their parent or guardian is also registered for the class.
Tuition: $130
Materials fee: none
Students bring:
• joyful hands and heart
• If you have sensitive skin or you just prefer the protection, you might want your favorite waterproof or water-resistant gloves.
• Feet! Barefoot is most fun, but rubber boots or lightweight shoes (“aqua sox” or equivalent) all work for tender or sensitive feet. Slip-on sandals are nice to have between mixes. We’ll be mixing coarse river sand, clayey subsoil, straw, and other fibers.
• A sample of your local sub-soil, so we can compare and contrast (a cup to a quart).
• Photos of your own work to share with the group, or any other interesting/applicable inspiration
• Skin lotion (mud/earth can have a drying effect; lanolin or lanolin/beeswax are good)
• Sun hat, sun protection, change of clothes
• Rain gear (we hope this will just be insurance)
• Water bottle
• paper and pen/pencil for notes/records, etc. (better than photos!)
• rations as needed, especially if you have special dietary needs
• Feel free to bring any favorite tools and/or materials you might feel appropriate for this course.
Copies of Build Your Own Earth Oven (aka "the cob oven bible") will be available for purchase.
